“The Mighty 1309” was taken at Brush Tunnel near Cumberland, Maryland in July 2025. This articulated locomotive is a 1949 Balwin H-6 class 2-6-6-2 “Mallet”. It pulled coal for Chesapeake & Ohio for 7 years before being replaced by a diesel engine. After sitting on static display then undergoing a $3.5 million restoration, it ran on its own power after 64 years. It proudly leads excursions from Cumberland to Frostburg for the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.
